In the lead-up to the 2024 parliamentary elections, Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson, the leader of the Middle Party, highlights key platform initiatives focused on border control, tax cuts, and reducing government spending. He announced plans to lower income tax and refund value-added tax on construction projects, asserting that it is feasible to implement both tax reductions and budget cuts simultaneously.

Central to his party’s agenda is addressing what he describes as disorder at the borders. He reiterated the Middle Party’s election promise to distribute the nation’s shares in Íslandsbanki directly to the citizens, a move he believes aligns with opportunities arising from the previous government’s inability to complete its privatization tasks.

Gunnlaugsson criticized the outgoing administration’s failure to finalize the privatization of Íslandsbanki, stating, “We can refer to our policy from the last elections and effectively execute what seems undoubtedly reasonable regarding the remainder of Íslandsbanki. We will distribute equal shares to all citizens.”

During a recent appearance on the talk show “Forystusætið,” Gunnlaugsson also emphasized plans to cut state expenditures and begin debt reduction efforts. He expressed a desire for more effective allocation of funds directed towards healthcare and education.

This focus on economic reform and citizen engagement could shape the party’s appeal as it prepares for the elections scheduled for November 30th.
