During a class at Hämeenkyrö Community School this Wednesday, a student’s phone caught fire. The phone began to sizzle on the student’s desk and subsequently emitted smoke. In response, the student threw the device to the floor, resulting in a loud bang.

According to reports, one student sustained burn injuries to their hands. The fire department was also alerted and responded to the scene. Tomi-Pekka Olkkonen, the duty chief of the Pirkanmaa rescue services, indicated that the fire crew arrived to assess the situation and ventilate the affected area. “There was enough smoke and odor indoors,” Olkkonen noted. By the time the rescue unit arrived, the phone had already been removed from the building.

No emergency medical assistance was required. Olkkonen mentioned that explosions involving battery-operated devices are not uncommon. “Incidents involving phone and battery fires are becoming more frequent, as there are so many devices in use today,” he stated. The school’s principal, Merja Heinäaho, was not available for comment on the incident at the time.
