The Finnish Defense Forces plan to recruit a significant number of new employees in the coming years, with the aim of hiring up to 1,000 individuals by the end of the decade. Recruitment will encompass both military and civilian roles. On the military side, there is an increase in training slots for officers and non-commissioned officers. Civilians will be recruited across various fields, including medical professionals, IT specialists, legal advisors, and human resources personnel.

Job opportunities will cater to individuals from diverse educational backgrounds, ranging from vocational training to doctorate programs. Currently, the Defense Forces employ approximately 7,000 to 8,000 staff members, with around 4,500 working in civilian positions. Some of the new jobs have already been filled during the previous years.

In 2021, the government led by Sanna Marin decided to increase the Defense Forces’ personnel count by 500 full-time equivalent positions by the end of the decade, a decision accelerated by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. In April of that year, Defense Minister Antti Kaikkonen announced additional funding for the Defense Forces amounting to billions. According to the Defense Forces, nearly half of the positions announced in the government report have already been filled, with the remainder expected to open between 2025 and 2026. The other half of these positions will be established during the current government term, influenced by changes due to NATO membership.

In addition to restructuring the Defense Forces, troops from other NATO countries will also be stationed in Finland. A NATO land forces headquarters will be established in Mikkeli, which will plan operations for Northern Europe. Furthermore, Forward Land Forces (FLF) units will be deployed in Lapland, either in Rovaniemi or Sodankylä, and these units will be led by Swedish commanders.
