The People’s Party is aiming for a spot in the Icelandic government in the upcoming parliament elections on November 30. Inga Sæland, the party leader, expresses optimism about their chances, noting an increased interest in the party’s candidate lists compared to previous elections.

The party submitted its lists last week, and Sæland is grateful for the strong response, primarily attributed to the grassroots support. The party’s main objectives include ensuring access to food, clothing, housing, and healthcare for all. Sæland stated, “Our goal is to achieve a good election, get into government, and implement provisions for basic necessities for everyone.”

She acknowledged that the short notice for the elections posed challenges but believes it also had a surprising positive outcome, especially with the effective collection of endorsements made easier by electronic means.

The party was established to combat poverty and continues to maintain that focus. Sæland highlighted the importance of supporting children’s education, investing in nursing facilities, and addressing addiction as a health issue that deserves the same attention and funding as other diseases.

Furthermore, the People’s Party advocates for a new housing loan system modeled after Denmark, aimed at making homeownership more accessible. Sæland emphasized that young people should not have to face exorbitant loan interests and should have predictable mortgage terms.

With the elections approaching, Sæland feels positively energized, stating, “We feel well received everywhere; there is optimism, smiles, and goodwill.” The party is ready to move forward, presenting its candidate lists from various regions across Iceland.
