Concerned pet owners gathered outside the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries today, demanding a revision of the regulation regarding pet importation. A spokesperson criticized the treatment of pets during the import process as unacceptable.

The meeting, which included representatives from the acting Minister of Food and Agriculture, allowed pet owners to express their concerns about recent changes to import regulations that came into effect on November 1. This change, implemented by the Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority, prohibits the transport of pets in the passenger cabins of airplanes. Instead, they can only be transported in freight compartments. Until now, Icelandair had been the primary airline for transporting a significant majority of dogs and cats into the country.

The Minister’s representative assured the pet owners that a task force would be established to address their concerns.

The recent adjustments to the regulations have stirred anxiety among pet owners, who fear for the well-being of their animals during transport. The situation has raised significant interest within the community, highlighting a growing discontent with how pet importation policies are being handled.

This mobilization reflects a broader dialogue about animal welfare and the complexities of pet relocation, as owners advocate for rules they believe must be considerate of both their pets’ comfort and safety during travel.
