A security guard has been hired once again at Nurmo Middle School in Southern Ostrobothnia, enhancing safety by patrolling both outdoor and indoor areas. This decision follows several incidents of violence involving students at the school. Acting Principal Päivi Katajisto explained that such violent situations create a sense of insecurity, prompting the decision to hire a guard. “We have received messages from several families expressing concerns about their children’s feelings of unsafety,” she added.

The school had a security guard on duty for a few weeks last winter, who monitored the external surroundings during school dismissal and ensured safe transitions to bus stops. Assistant Principal Marianne Tarkka noted that the presence of the guard had a positive impact, helping to calm the atmosphere during the school’s closing time.

Another factor leading to the hiring of a security guard is the presence of non-students on campus during school hours this fall. Tarkka acknowledged that, while there were no overtly malicious intentions behind their presence, it is important to maintain school security. “It is essential to remember that people cannot just walk into a school unannounced,” she stated.

The guard’s role aims to bolster the safety and sense of security for both students and staff. “We are doing everything we can to ensure everyone feels safe,” said Katajisto. Nurmo Middle School serves over 600 students. The story was first reported by Ilkka-Pohjalainen.
