Today, police will have the authority to seize assets such as watches and cars from individuals if these items can be linked to criminal suspicion. A new law set to take effect on November 8 alters this process, allowing for the seizure of property without the need to prove a specific crime. It will be sufficient for the assets to be disproportionate to the suspect’s income or property.

The legislation, known as “confiscation legislation,” aims to combat organized crime and disrupt the financial operations of criminals. The government has described this reform as one of the most significant changes in criminal law since the introduction of the Penal Code 60 years ago.

On Monday, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson, and Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer will visit the Police Authority and meet with Chief of Police Petra Lundh. A press conference is scheduled for 10 AM.

This new approach reflects increasing efforts to address gang-related crimes and strengthen law enforcement capabilities in dealing with organized crime. The updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
