New Ronald McDonald House opening in Odense, Denmark, to support families of seriously ill children
A new Ronald McDonald House is set to open in Odense on March 19, designed to provide a sanctuary for families with seriously ill children undergoing long-term hospital treatment. This house will be adjacent to the still-under-construction Nyt OUH hospital. Although the new hospital’s completion timeline remains uncertain, Rikke Holm, director of the Ronald McDonald Children’s Foundation, expresses enthusiasm about the house’s opening.
She emphasizes that families can find support during difficult times. “Our volunteers can come in, and so can our families. While it would have been ideal for Nyt OUH to be ready, we are already addressing practical matters like access cards. I see no real obstacles. The house is situated in a beautiful natural setting, and once families are inside, being near a construction site won’t matter,” Holm says.
The new facility will have 15 furnished rooms, common areas, playrooms, and creative spaces, allowing parents, siblings, and grandparents to stay close to their hospitalized child. Holm notes, “It’s designed to feel like a home, complete with all the necessary amenities, fostering comfort and community.”
The existing Ronald McDonald House at Rigshospitalet has been operating for 22 years, offering support to families with children facing various health challenges, including those in psychiatric care. The foundation aims to ensure that the new house in Odense is utilized effectively, preventing it from standing empty.
Families from anywhere in Denmark will have access to the house, which is beneficial as travel to the hospital can be lengthy. Plans for completing the Nyt OUH hospital continue to experience delays, raising concerns within Region Syddanmark regarding financial penalties for the contractor involved.
