Construction begins on additional lava barriers in Grindavík, Iceland to safeguard Svartsengi
Work has begun on the construction of a protective barrier in Grindavík, Iceland, to prevent lava from flowing towards Svartsengi. This is an addition to the barrier that is already in place, which runs across the path of the lava. The highest parts of the barrier have reached 25 meters in height.
The area surrounding Sýlingarfell, north of Svartsengi in Grindavík, is covered in lava. The lava flow has been strong and the lava itself is now around 20 meters thick. However, it does not only flow on the surface.
It was reported that lava leaked out a week after the last eruption ended. To protect the large barrier near Svartsengi and the structures there from potential lava flow, it has been decided to build two more barriers somewhat perpendicular to the existing one.
