Sixteen-year-old Olivia Käkönen from Valkeakoski no longer walks alone at night. “If I walk somewhere, it’s always with a friend,” she says, now accompanied by a personal safety alarm given to her by her mother. Her cousin, 14-year-old Iris Käkönen, also carries a similar alarm. This heightened sense of caution stems from the murder of a teenage girl in Valkeakoski last May. The 15-year-old did not return home after a night out, and her body was discovered the following day in a nearby forest. The incident shocked the entire nation.

In the aftermath, the community has come together to support each other. Both Olivia and Iris shared their feelings about safety in a video, recalling the first day back at school after the tragedy, marked by the presence of workers in red vests from the Red Cross and an absence of regular classes. Nita Käkönen, a youth worker, reflected on the shock she felt upon hearing the news of the murder.

The local judicial system sentenced a man born in 2005 to life imprisonment for the murder and aggravated sexual assault; he and the victim were unknown to each other. The case has forever altered daily life for the approximately 20,000 residents of Valkeakoski. In the months since the incident, young residents have started to regain a sense of normalcy. Olivia mentioned that the summer felt strange without one friend present, emphasizing that the community continues to process their grief collectively.

Support remains available for those struggling. Nita Käkönen stresses the importance of speaking about feelings, noting that children are encouraged to seek help if they are overwhelmed by fear or sorrow. As the community honors the victim’s memory, friendships and open conversations about grief remain vital to the healing process.
