Sweden considers fighter jet options as decision deadline approaches

Developing a new fighter jet can take up to 25 years, prompting Sweden to consider its next steps in military aviation. The government is exploring three options: developing a new Swedish fighter, joining an international collaboration, or purchasing an existing foreign system. A decision is expected by 2030.

Both the Social Democrats and the Sweden Democrats express dissatisfaction with this timeline, urging a more immediate focus on a Swedish solution. Peter Hultqvist, the Social Democrats’ defense spokesperson, emphasizes that prioritizing the domestic option is critical to maintaining Swedish research and expertise. Similarly, Lars Wistedt, defense spokesperson for the Sweden Democrats, believes the best course of action is to develop a Swedish fighter due to its operational advantages and benefits to society.

The Social Democrats plan to introduce their own proposal concerning the next generation of combat aircraft ahead of a defense decision scheduled for December. They anticipate forming a majority in the parliament with the support of the Sweden Democrats, stating, “We will present our proposals, and other parties will need to respond.”

Defense Minister Pål Jonson remains optimistic about reaching a bipartisan consensus on defense issues, considering the long-term economic implications of any decisions made. He intends to include all parliamentary parties in the investigation process to ensure comprehensive decision-making.

Preparations for the defense decision, which will cover the 2025-2030 period, are underway. The final report from the defense committee was submitted in April, and the government has already proposed a framework for discussion, which is currently being reviewed by the defense committee in parliament. A final decision is expected in December.
