In the small northern Danish town of Oue, a unique opportunity arises for fans of Ole Lund Kirkegaard’s literary works: the school where the renowned author served as both a teacher and principal in the 1960s and 70s is now up for sale. This is the same school that inspired characters from beloved books such as ‘Lille Virgil,’ ‘Otto is et næsehorn,’ and ‘Orla Frøsnapper.’

Jens Jørgen Pedersen, a former student of Kirkegaard, recalls the author as a remarkable teacher who allowed great freedom during recess. Pedersen reminisces about the antics that often ensued during breaks, which Kirkegaard himself participated in, creating an environment full of creativity and fun.

Kirkegaard taught at the school from 1965 to 1973, and many of his memorable characters were likely influenced by the students and their playful antics. Pedersen shares a humorous story from a snowy winter day when he accidentally knocked Kirkegaard’s hat off, leading to a snowball fight that demonstrated the author’s playful spirit and caring nature.

The school, formerly known as Oue Skole and renamed Lille Virgils Friskole, has not seen children filled with imagination since it closed in 2011. Lenette Nielsen, who has owned the property with her husband for several years, is now selling it for 1,495,000 kroner, emphasizing the school’s unique creative atmosphere that reflects Kirkegaard’s legacy. The vibrant mural on the building, created by artist Franco Coluzzi, adds to its charm, capturing the essence of the stories that continue to resonate with readers today.
