When constructing new buildings, planning must account for heavy rainstorms that can cause significant challenges. However, managing large volumes of water in existing structures presents difficulties, according to Kristina Hall, a water strategy expert at VA SYD. She emphasizes the importance of finding ways to handle excess water to minimize damage.

Many urban areas are built so densely that there is often no feasible drainage for stormwater. Municipalities are tasked with adapting infrastructure to accommodate increasing rainfall amounts. Nevertheless, property owners can also take steps to reduce the risk of flood damage. Hall advises securing low-lying areas, redirecting water away from properties, and safeguarding access points such as driveways and stairs.

In heavy rainfall events, public drainage systems can quickly become overwhelmed. To alleviate the burden on municipal systems, property owners can direct runoff to grassy surfaces. Additionally, Hall suggests collecting rainwater for irrigation purposes.

Areas at risk of flooding are regularly reviewed every six years to identify significant risks. In February, five new locations were added to the list, including Eskilstuna, Gävle, Sundsvall, Varberg, and Västerås. Other cities at risk include Göteborg, Jönköping, and Uppsala, among others.

These proactive strategies and considerations are essential as communities face the growing threat of flooding linked to climate change and urban development.
