Significant changes are being planned for Finland’s airspace. The reform is deemed necessary due to the introduction of new flight equipment, evolving user needs, and the Finnish Defense Forces’ new capabilities along with NATO collaboration. The last major overhaul of airspace regulations in Finland took place in 2014.
The primary goal of this reform is to ensure that there is sufficient safe airspace for all users going forward. There is a particular need for clarity regarding the use of what is known as lower airspace, which is primarily accessed by unmanned aerial vehicles, including drones. Additionally, the new fighter jets of the Defense Forces will require more airspace during larger training exercises than previously needed.
This initiative is aimed at completion by 2027, and it may lead to changes in regulations or aviation laws. The project is being led by the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency, Traficom.
