Kuusenkuiske Kindergarten in Kuhmo has unveiled a new, nature-friendly playground that features berry bushes and trees, attracting the interest of researchers. The Natural Resources Institute and the University of Tampere are studying the impact of a revitalized outdoor area on children’s well-being and immune health. Samples are being collected from the kindergarten’s playground to assess plant species and gather data from families through surveys related to children’s health, lifestyle, and outdoor activities.

In some kindergartens, samples from children are being analyzed to understand how exposure to nature affects the body’s microbiome and immune response, according to researcher Laura Kummola from the University of Tampere. Blood tests will help determine if inflammation levels decrease, while hair samples will indicate cortisol levels, providing insight into stress levels over time.

The newly redesigned playground includes a small forest area with a shelter, open spaces, and play equipment, in addition to plans for planting beds for growing vegetables, like carrots, in the spring. This kindergarten is one of 43 that have received approximately one million euros in funding for enhancing outdoor environments and promoting physical activities.

The research underway is the first to investigate the benefits of such natural environments in kindergartens designed by municipalities themselves. The transformation of the playground has significantly increased children’s physical activities. Kindergarten director Hanna-Liisa Pikkarainen reported that outdoor play opportunities have enhanced, making the space more aesthetically pleasing and enjoyable for everyone.

As children spend considerable time outdoors in kindergartens, this study could offer valuable insights into the role of daily nature exposure in fostering health and well-being among young children. Previous studies have already highlighted the positive effects of nature-based kindergartens on physical activity, creative play, and immune balance, underscoring the importance of integrating natural elements into playground designs.
