The potential for increased autonomy in the Nordic Council is significant if the Faroe Islands and Greenland gain independent membership. This change would alter Denmark’s influence in the council, as it would mean that the Kingdom of Denmark would have three votes.
Such a shift could explain why Sweden has been particularly opposed to the membership of the Faroe Islands and Greenland.
During a recent discussion in the program “Breddin,” former prime ministers Kaj Leo Holm Johannesen and Jóannes Eidesgaard shared their thoughts on the implications of this potential membership for both the Faroe Islands and the Nordic Council.
The entire discussion can be listened to through the program’s audio link.
