Government proposes stricter crime statute of limitations in Sweden
The government is proposing stricter rules regarding the statute of limitations on crimes. A new bill suggests abolishing the limitation period for all crimes carrying a life sentence. Additionally, the limitation periods will be extended for several serious offenses, including rape, aggravated assault, robbery, extortion, arson, and firearms-related crimes.
For offenses related to honor-based oppression against children, the limitation period will be extended and will begin from the day the victim turns 18. This practice already exists for several other severe offenses against minors. Furthermore, any prison sentences imposed, regardless of their length, will never expire. Thus, individuals sentenced to prison will no longer be able to evade punishment simply by remaining at large.
The proposals will be presented in a legal advisory bill and are set to take effect on April 1 of next year. These recommendations are based on an investigation initiated by the previous Social Democratic-Green government in 2020.
