A recent survey has revealed that 70% of residents in Drammen oppose school closures amidst the municipality’s financial crisis. Drammen is facing a budget deficit of 150 million Norwegian kroner for 2025, prompting discussions about potentially shutting down schools to alleviate financial pressures. Rødskog School is the only institution currently at risk of closure.

When asked if they support school closures to resolve these economic issues, the survey indicated that 70% of participants disagreed, with higher opposition among women (78%) compared to men (63%). The survey, which involved 509 residents, sparked a debate over the decision-making process among local politicians.

Mads Hilden, a representative from the Labour Party, articulated that the negative responses reflect a community understanding of the broader implications of the school system, noting that the current budget approach might not encompass the overall societal value schools provide. He suggested that politicians have lost touch with community sentiments.

On the other hand, Kristin Surlien from the Conservative Party expressed awareness of the strong feelings surrounding the matter, stating that the community’s strong desire for feedback will be considered. Despite acknowledgment of the opposition, she emphasized that tackling the budget crisis poses tough choices for elected officials.

The proposal to close Rødskog School will reportedly be further discussed in a public hearing in February. Public sentiments highlight a concern that reducing educational facilities could deter families from settling in Drammen, raising questions about the town’s future demographics and appeal. The ongoing debate continues to unfold amid heightened community engagement and discussions on the municipality’s financial strategies.
