The proposal to close Kanebogen School in Harstad has sparked significant opposition among students who feel overlooked by politicians. A report commissioned by the municipality suggests the school could be closed in two of three proposed scenarios due to an anticipated decline in student enrollment by 2050. Students and teachers have rallied against the closure, emphasizing the school’s importance for friendships and a sense of security.

Politicians have expressed that they are moved by the students’ engagement and stress that no final decision has been made, with an official resolution expected in December. Student council representatives Natalie Opheim and Marie Strøm Skogstad voiced their concerns outside a municipal meeting, urging decision-makers to consider their perspectives.

Strøm Skogstad described the attachment students have to the school, stating, “We feel safe here and have many friends.” They emphasize feeling unheard by the politicians involved in the decision-making process.

Despite the anticipated drop in enrollment, both students and teachers at Kanebogen School report feeling marginalized in discussions surrounding the proposed closure. Nina Dons Hansen, a city council leader, expressed her emotional reaction during the students’ appeals, highlighting the significant role the school plays in the community.

Harstad’s deputy mayor, Espen Ludvigsen, stated that children’s voices are crucial in this matter while acknowledging the complexities of school closure decisions. The mayor thanked students for their engagement and reminded them of the importance of expressing their opinions regarding community decisions. The hope remains that the voices of those at Kanebogen School will be duly considered in the ongoing discussion.
