The city of Seinäjoki is planning to limit the number of visitors during events in Lakeudenpuisto and Olavi Pihan parks to a maximum of 1,000 attendees at a time. This proposal will be reviewed by the city’s environmental committee next week.

Juha Takamaa, the director of city environment, explained that the park grounds are not designed to support large crowds, posing a safety risk, especially during rain. According to park area specifications, Lakeudenpuisto and Olavi Pihan parks can accommodate between 5,000 and 12,000 people.

Last summer, the parks suffered damage during events like Yle X Pop and Vauhtiajot due to heavy rain. Yle X Pop was interrupted, and water was pumped out during Vauhtiajot. Next summer, Vauhtiajot will return to Kirkkokatu after several years in Lakeudenpuisto. Promoter Kalle Keskinen reassured that this change is not a problem, stating, “The return doesn’t bother us. We will continue to grow on Kirkkokatu, which has plenty of space.”

If the committee approves the proposal, only smaller, day-long events would be permitted in the area, along with the construction of minor structures. Takamaa acknowledged that while these restrictions are not ideal, safety must take precedence.

Moreover, plans are underway for a zoning change next year and extensive renovations in the coming years. If everything progresses as intended, the park developments could begin in 2026, pending political decisions regarding budget allocations.
