Deadline approaches as twelve parties declare intention to run in parliamentary elections in Iceland

The deadline for submitting candidacies for the upcoming parliamentary elections is set to expire today at noon. Twelve political parties have confirmed their intentions to run, although one has withdrawn.

Political scientist Eiríkur Bergmann commented on a recent poll indicating that only six parties could potentially secure seats in parliament, unlike previous elections, where eight parties had the chance. He noted that this could result in a significant number of votes being wasted, particularly for parties like the Left-Greens, Pirates, Socialists, and the new Democracy Party, which are currently polling below the threshold. As elections approach, parties that appear unlikely to secure seats often struggle to maintain their support, while those on the brink may ramp up efforts to attract votes.

Bergmann emphasized the importance of recent developments concerning the party Viðreisn. He pointed out that while Viðreisn has capitalized on available political space, other parties, including the Pirates, have failed to do so. The independence party, seeking to recover support lost to the Middle Party, faces challenges as it shifts its stance on immigration policies.

At the same time, the Social Democratic Alliance continues to slide in support since changing its approach toward immigration issues. Overall, political analysts seem to agree that the dynamics of this election cycle have created a precarious balancing act for many parties.

The National Election Commission is currently accepting candidacy submissions until noon today. By last night, 29 candidacy lists had been submitted electronically, and further submissions can be made at district offices.
