Swedish political parties debate age limit for social media usage amid growing concerns
In a recent discussion, Swedish political parties L, KD, S, and SD expressed their support for the implementation of an age limit for social media usage. Teresa Carvalho, the spokesperson for justice policy from the Social Democrats, highlighted concerns that social media can detract from students’ academic work and physical activity.
Conversely, other parties, namely M, C, V, and MP, oppose the idea of legislating such a limit. Niels Paarup-Petersen, the spokesperson for digitalization from the Centre Party, emphasized the importance of companies managing existing age restrictions and insisted that parents should also bear responsibility for their children’s online activities.
This debate is part of a broader conversation about the impact of social media on youth and the appropriate measures to protect them. The urgency of these discussions has gained momentum in various countries, including Norway, which is considering introducing a minimum age requirement of 15 for social media engagement.
As governments and policymakers weigh the implications of these potential regulations, the conversation around social media’s influence on younger generations remains a key issue in contemporary politics.
