A verdict is expected today in the case of Mohamad Kourani at the Reykjanes District Court. Kourani is accused of stabbing a man last March, among other charges. He is also accused of assaulting and threatening another man who tried to help the stabbing victim in an OK Market in Hlíðarenda.

Kourani faces six charges in total, four of which are related to crimes against the state. These include spitting on a prison guard, spraying an unknown liquid on another person, threatening a police officer and his family with death, and spitting in a police officer’s face at the Reykjavik District Court. The charges are the result of incidents that reportedly occurred last June, a day after the alleged stabbing incident.

The district prosecutor has suggested that Kourani be sentenced to six to eight years in prison. Kourani is originally from Syria and was granted international protection in Iceland in 2018. According to the Reykjanes District Court, between 2017 and 2021, the police dealt with over a hundred incidents where Kourani was suspected of criminal behavior. He has previously been convicted of numerous other crimes, including assault, burglary, violation of a restraining order, document forgery, weapons offenses, and crimes against the state.
