The Eurooppatie 16 is set to expand into Finland. The Working Group on Road Transport of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe has approved Finland’s proposal for the E16 route to extend from Rauma to Kotka. Currently, the E16 runs from Northern Ireland through Scotland, Norway, and terminates in Gävle, Sweden. The new Finnish section will cover a distance of 400 kilometers.
The Finnish segment includes Highway 12 between Rauma and Kouvola and Highway 15 from Kouvola to Mussalo in Kotka. In the Tampere area, the E16 will utilize the Tampere Ring Road.
European route numbers identify significant transportation corridors that connect various European states. Previously, Finland has had seven designated European routes. The decision by the Economic Commission has garnered praise from representatives of the governing parties. Minister of Transport, Communications, and the Interior, Lulu Ranne, stated that the decision will enhance transportation links between the east and west. Matias Marttinen, chairman of the National Coalition Party’s parliamentary group from Rauma, emphasized that this agreement improves the chances of securing funding for the road segment from both Finland and the European Union.
However, the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency clarified that funding will not be automatic. According to Pekka Rajala, director at the agency, the re-numbering of the road does not create inherent pressure to improve its condition as road planning is based on traffic needs.
The proposal is not final until UN Secretary-General António Guterres informs the involved states of the changes. This is essential because the Economic Commission operates under the UN, and the Secretary-General plays a key role in the process. The amendment will be finalized unless states oppose it within six months of the notification. In Finland, the change is to be approved by President Alexander Stubb.
