Millions allocated to 4,000 sports clubs across Norway with significant funding for Oslo and Drammen
Millions of kronor are being distributed to around 4,000 sports clubs across Norway. On Monday, Culture Minister Lubna Jaffery visited Sagene IF in Oslo, which will receive nearly 2 million kroner in funding from the fall grant allocation.
Drammen ranks fourth in the distribution of funds, with several clubs receiving significant amounts. The allocation includes:
– Drammen Swimming Club: 215,073 kroner
– Mjøndalen Sports Association: 478,768 kroner
– Åssiden Sports Association: 332,028 kroner
– Eiker Golf Club: 44,241 kroner
The Ministry of Culture states that the grant aims to ensure that all children and youth aged 6 to 19 have equal opportunities to participate in sports, regardless of their location or families’ socio-economic conditions. Jaffery emphasized the importance of lowering costs and increasing participation, pointing out that this government is the first to allocate funds in this manner, highlighting the critical role sports play individually and within communities.
The funds will be used to keep parental fees low, promote inclusivity, and cover expenses related to training fees, tournaments, and equipment. Since its initiation, 225 million kroner has been disbursed through this scheme.
The sports councils in individual municipalities distribute the funds, in addition to 10 million kroner allocated specifically by sports districts. A recent survey by the Norwegian Sports Federation indicates that 56.4% of the sports clubs find the funds have significantly met their intended purpose.
Jaffery noted that while the initiative is valuable, it is crucial for the government to continue providing support in the 2025 budget, as economic challenges persist. Oslo clubs received the largest share, with the city alone receiving over 30 million kroner, followed by Bergen and Fredrikstad.
