Seafarers should be capable of completing the new training program for deckhands through distance or self-directed learning, according to the Shipowners’ Association for Commercial Vessels in their response to a proposal regarding the training regulations for deckhands.
It is crucial for individuals with vocational education or work experience to be able to have their competencies assessed and receive reduced classroom time.
However, the association expresses doubt about whether the best solution is to refer to regulations regarding competence assessment, particularly due to the age limit set at 25 years.
Additionally, the proposal does not specifically detail how work experience will be evaluated.
The Shipowners’ Association advocates for a more flexible training program, suggesting distance learning and self-directed study so that those undertaking the training do not have to interrupt their employment during the process.
