Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the participation of North Korean soldiers in the conflict in Ukraine represents a significant escalation and alters the course of the war. Speaking at a press conference today in Reykjavik, during a gathering of Nordic Council, Zelensky expressed concerns about the implications of approximately 12,000 North Korean troops training in Russia for the war effort.

He highlighted that while some allies may be skeptical, information confirms that North Korean soldiers are in Russia for military training. Zelensky reported that 3,000 soldiers, including commanders, are already preparing for combat. He emphasized the urgency of a strong response from Western nations and Ukraine’s allies, warning that without it, Russian President Vladimir Putin may continue to pursue aggressive strategies.

Zelensky mentioned a call he had with the South Korean president, who is aware of the North Korean presence in Russia. He also consulted with Nordic leaders, stressing that NATO, the U.S., and allies must respond more decisively to this development, which he believes is dangerous and could change the war’s dynamics.

Reflecting on past interactions following Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014, Zelensky noted the previous silence from Western nations. This inaction, he claims, encouraged Putin to escalate his actions in Ukraine. He cautioned that if international reactions remain muted, more North Korean troops, along with potential support from other nations like Iran, could be forthcoming.

When asked about dwindling support from Western European countries, Zelensky acknowledged it as a challenge but affirmed that maintaining a unified stance within the European Union is crucial to supporting Ukraine’s efforts.
