Three out of four Finns (74%) would vote for Democrat Kamala Harris if they could participate in the U.S. presidential election on November 5. In contrast, only one in ten (10%) would support Republican Donald Trump, according to a survey by the Confederation of Finnish Industries (EVA).

The autumn 2024 values and attitudes survey suggests that Finnish concerns about a potential Trump victory stem from fears that his policies could destabilize global stability and adversely affect Finland’s security situation. Nearly three-quarters (72%) believe that Trump’s election would negatively impact peace and conflict dynamics worldwide, with only 13% viewing the effects as positive. Over half (55%) also perceive a negative consequence for Finland’s position as a neighbor to Russia.

Conversely, Harris’s potential election is viewed predominantly positively. A majority (56%) thinks her presidency would positively influence global peace and conflict resolution, and 43% believe it would benefit Finland’s relations with Russia, although 49% are uncertain.

Concerns have been raised among Finns about the potential ambiguity of U.S. commitment to NATO and, by extension, to Finland’s security during a second Trump term. Despite Trump publicizing peace plans for Ukraine, his messages regarding NATO and his stance towards Russia create uncertainty in Finland, according to EVA’s editorial manager, Sami Metelinen.

Support for Trump is highest among Finns Party supporters (41%), followed by Christian Democrats (29%). Among supporters of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Left Alliance, and Swedish People’s Party (RKP), only 1% support Trump. Meanwhile, Harris is favored by 96% of SDP and Green Party supporters.

The results are based on responses from 2,018 individuals in an online panel conducted by Taloustutkimus Oy, with a margin of error of 2-3 percentage points at the population level. Data was collected from October 8 to October 21, 2024.
