In northern Finland, tourists are increasingly seen as a safety concern in traffic, according to a survey conducted by Liikenneturva last year. The survey revealed that nearly three out of five residents in Lapland consider the driving behavior of tourists to be a security issue. Many believe that the driving skills of visitors do not adapt well to the challenging northern conditions.

Petri Niska, the local traffic safety coordinator in Rovaniemi, indicated that tourists arriving from larger cities often demonstrate a lack of awareness regarding traffic safety. Compared to bustling urban environments, traffic in Lapland is relatively calm; however, this tranquility can lead tourists to behave recklessly, such as walking in the middle of the road or even sledding on streets.

Niska noted that while snow, ice, and darkness are familiar elements for Finns, foreign drivers might struggle with even basic practices like proper use of vehicle lights. Additionally, tourists enchanted by the Northern Lights, snow, or reindeer may stop to take photos, whether they are on foot or in vehicles.

Niska pointed out that some tourists, guided by Google Maps, inadvertently drive onto snowmobile trails and pedestrian paths. Particularly in the area near Santa Claus Village and an adjacent airport intersection, traffic accidents involving tourists have been a concern.

To address these issues, Liikenneturva hopes the tourism industry will help disseminate information about safe local traffic practices to international visitors. As part of this initiative, English-language materials have already been introduced in rental car agencies, with plans to expand information distribution to hotels and other venues to enhance traffic safety awareness.
