Drammen Handball Club’s recent matchup against the Israeli team Holon Yuvalim in the European Cup provided both opportunity and concern. Drawing an Israeli team was seen as a favorable matchup for one of Norway’s top squads. However, the political tensions surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict raised significant security concerns, prompting intense discussions between DHK management and law enforcement. As a result, the hall was closed to spectators.

Despite the lack of fans, DHK demonstrated strong performance on the court, initially taking the lead before ending the first half behind at 17-18. In the second half, the Norwegian team pulled away to secure a 35-29 victory. The return match is scheduled for tomorrow in Drammenshallen, also without an audience.

The Norwegian Police Security Service (PST) has raised the threat level due to potential attacks on Israeli or Jewish targets, which has influenced security preparations for the matches. DHK officials have met with PST and police to discuss possible scenarios ranging from protests to terrorist threats. Authorities have assured safety measures will be in place for the Israeli team throughout their time in the city.

The atmosphere around this event starkly contrasts with the vibrancy of DHK’s 1996 European Cup victory, when the arena was filled with cheering fans. Currently, however, there is a notable absence of supporters and media coverage due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has been exacerbated in recent months. Consequently, the club has opted for a low-profile approach, refraining from promotional activities surrounding the matches.
