Danish Plowing Championships showcase agricultural skills in Grindsted
The Danish Plowing Championships are taking place in Grindsted this Friday and Saturday, showcasing participants carefully maneuvering tractors equipped with plows across the fields. Precision is key, as competitors ensure that the plow turns the soil correctly.
This year’s championship features nine different disciplines, including a category specifically for agricultural schools. Among the participants is Lasse Damborg Madsen from Grindsted Agricultural School, who is part of a team that includes three others. While Lasse operates the tractor, his teammates monitor the plowing to ensure the soil is evenly laid and plowed to the correct depth of 22 centimeters.
Plowing is considered an essential skill for agriculture students, similar to how a hairstylist learns to cut hair or a carpenter learns to drive nails. The students are taught the correct techniques in their coursework, which includes avoiding plowing too deeply and maintaining consistent furrows. Subtle nuances can reveal differences in skill levels among competitors, as noted by Erik Friis Møller, the principal of Grindsted Agricultural School.
The nine disciplines this year include various plowing categories, such as standard and reversing plows in stubble and green land, as well as competitions for veterans and retro styles.
The event serves as a valuable networking opportunity for students from different schools, allowing them to socialize while showcasing their agricultural skills. Unlike other fields that have competitions like DM in Skills, future farmers face challenges in demonstrating their craft due to the equipment required.
After the competition, despite the spirited rivalry, Lasse looks forward to socializing with fellow participants, though the trophy ultimately went to students from Asmildkloster Agricultural School in Viborg.
