Concerns raised over treatment resources for troubled youth after fire tragedy in Iceland
Concerns regarding the lack of resources for troubled children have come to light following the tragic death of a 17-year-old boy, Geir Örn Jacobsen, who perished in a fire at the treatment facility Stuðlar. His father has criticized the system’s inability to adequately support children facing challenges, emphasizing that improvements are urgently needed in managing addiction and mental health issues.
Just two days before the incident, Geir Örn and his father discussed the care provided at Stuðlar in an interview, highlighting the staff’s neglect and the facility’s inability to meet the diverse needs of its residents. Reports have noted that the facility was overstretched, leading to concerns for the children’s well-being.
Education and Children’s Minister Ásmundur Einar Daðason acknowledged the shortage of resources for troubled youth, particularly evident during the crisis when the fire occurred. He mentioned ongoing efforts to provide more temporary and follow-up treatment options, including new facilities in the region.
Geir Örn’s father, Jón K. Jacobsen, expressed his frustration over what he perceives as inadequate treatment over the years, having fought for his son’s welfare within the system for a decade.
In the wake of the fire, current measures are being taken to minimize the impact on the children who were residents at Stuðlar. Ásmundur Einar assured that all involved in child protection will draw lessons from this tragic event, reinforcing the commitment to enhance care for vulnerable children in the future.
