Concerns rise over E.coli outbreak at Mánagarður preschool in Iceland
Concerns are rising over an E.coli outbreak at the Mánagarður preschool in Iceland, with suspicions that an additional eleven children may be infected. This follows the diagnosis of 27 children who have already been treated at the Children’s Hospital of the Ring Road, bringing the total number of affected children to 38.
Currently, two children remain in serious condition in intensive care at Landspítali. The children fell ill after consuming contaminated food at the preschool. In response, two departments of a preschool in Hveragerði have been closed due to E.coli contamination, as authorities investigate samples from fruits, frozen vegetables, and meat in an effort to trace the source of the infection. Results from the testing are expected by the weekend, with preliminary findings available as soon as tomorrow.
As of today, two of the four hospitalized children have been discharged from the Children’s Hospital of the Ring Road. The outbreak has raised alarm in the Reykjavik area, with city officials expressing a strong desire to ensure that the majority of affected children are receiving the necessary medical care.
This developing situation underscores the urgency of food safety measures in childcare settings and the efforts needed to ensure the health and safety of children in educational environments.
