Outbreak of E. coli infections affects 27 children from Mánagarður preschool in Reykjavík
Reykjavík’s Children’s Hospital is currently monitoring a concerning outbreak of E. coli infections that has affected 27 children from the Mánagarður preschool. Chief physician Ragnar Grímur Bjarnason expressed hope that no more children will be added to this group, emphasizing that those who are likely to fall ill have already shown symptoms or are on their way to the hospital.
As of now, four children are hospitalized, with two in serious condition. Bjarnason indicated that there have been no new cases diagnosed overnight, as tests are not processed during the night. Current efforts are focused on supporting affected patients rather than administering antibiotics, which can exacerbate the situation by causing a toxic storm that further endangers the kidneys of those infected.
Management of the illness involves closely monitoring and maintaining the fluid balance, blood pressure, and salt levels of those affected. Bjarnason noted that while the risk of transmission from E. coli is lower compared to respiratory infections, precautions against contamination—especially related to fecal matter—are crucial.
The Reykjavík City Health Department has been actively responding to this outbreak, with additional measures being taken as the situation evolves. An ongoing effort is required to keep the number of infections from rising further, and health officials remain vigilant for any new developments in the outbreak.
