Trump promises peace resolution for Ukraine if elected U.S. president, Sweden’s Defense Minister comments
If Donald Trump wins the U.S. presidential election, he has promised to resolve the war in Ukraine before taking office. Sweden’s Defense Minister, Pål Jonson, refrained from commenting on Trump’s plan but emphasized that only Ukraine can decide when it is appropriate to negotiate for peace. He stated, “It is important that no decisions are made without Ukraine’s involvement.”
Trump has yet to unveil a comprehensive peace plan; however, his vice-presidential candidate, JD Vance, has outlined some elements. The proposed plan includes establishing a demilitarized zone along the existing front lines and transferring occupied territories to Russia. As part of the agreement, Ukraine would also receive security guarantees in exchange for not pursuing membership in the European Union or NATO. Jonson indicated that Sweden does not support this idea, affirming, “All NATO allies have established that Ukraine has the right to become a member, and that Ukraine should become allied.”
He further underlined the principle that all countries should determine their own security policies, including their potential membership in the EU or NATO. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine continues to stir discussions and divisions within the U.S., especially among presidential candidates as they navigate their foreign policy stances.
