Entrepreneur Lauri Salovaara is expressing frustration with the city of Oulu. “I am genuinely tired of all this. I would rather not fight but complete this with the resources I have and start the operation,” he stated. Over the past year, Salovaara has encountered two disputes with the city, the latest concerning Koljunmaja, a nearly 100-year-old wooden house he purchased from the city last year. He has been renovating it to serve as a meeting and event space.

During the renovations, it was discovered that the house was not entirely made of wood as claimed, and the flooring was extensively mold-infested. Repairing the floor will cost tens of thousands of euros. Salovaara sought compensation from the city, but the municipal board determined that no reimbursement for the flooring would be given.

“There’s a statement in the inspection report that says further investigation is needed. As a layperson, I may not have approached this correctly, but common sense suggests we cannot sell it this way,” Salovaara said.

The city responded by stating that the condition assessment indicated the building’s foundation was fair and that it was the buyer’s responsibility to verify the floor’s condition. Despite the lack of mention regarding risk structures in the flooring, the city believes there was no misinformation provided.

Additionally, Salovaara faces challenges with a cabin he rents out for meetings and accommodations, as the city has indicated the business must cease due to zoning violations. He considers the city’s actions against his entrepreneurial ventures to be unjust and indicative of an anti-business attitude. Salovaara now states that Koljunmaja will be his last business endeavor in Oulu.
