Surge in hand grenade use reported in Scandinavian countries in 2024
The use of hand grenades in violent crime has surged dramatically in 2024, exceeding levels from previous years. By early October, incidents involving hand grenades in criminal activities have more than doubled compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile, customs authorities have reported a significant increase in seizures.
Previously, hand grenades were not considered a smuggling issue, as noted by a customs official. This year, 30 hand grenades have been intercepted at the border, contrasting with none last year. The challenge of acquiring stolen explosives is believed to partly explain this rise.
Experts highlight that hand grenades come fully assembled, making them easier to smuggle compared to other types of explosives that require manufacturing.
Data from a national bomb data center reveals a concerning trend in criminal grenade use:
– 2020: 4 incidents
– 2021: 8 incidents
– 2022: 12 incidents
– 2023: 9 incidents
– 2024 (January to October 18): 22 incidents
As authorities investigate this spike in hand grenade incidents, questions regarding the underlying causes and the methods of smuggling into the country are emerging. Video coverage is available for more detailed insights into these developments.
