Ragnar Þór Ingólfsson announces candidacy for People’s Party in Reykjavik parliamentary elections

Ragnar Þór Ingólfsson, the chairman of the VR labor union, is set to represent the People’s Party as the second candidate in one of the electoral districts of Reykjavik for the upcoming parliamentary elections in 2024. He emphasizes that his candidacy will not interfere with his responsibilities at VR and has not considered taking leave from his position.

Having led VR for the past seven years, Ragnar Þór succeeded Ólafía B. Rafnsdóttir in elections. He expresses his readiness to contribute to public service if there is demand from the populace, stating that until then, he will continue to fulfill his duties at VR.

A key issue for Ragnar Þór is housing policy, particularly advocating for a new housing loan system based on the Danish model implemented in the 1990s. This system aims to provide citizens with predictability and longer fixed-rate loans. He also highlights the rights of tenants and the need for increased housing construction.

The People’s Party had six members elected in the last elections, two more than when it first entered parliament in the autumn of 2017. Among the elected representatives, Tómas A. Tómasson, a restaurateur, led the party’s list in North Reykjavik but will not be serving this time. Attempts to contact him for comments and the party’s other representative, Jakob Frímann Magnússon from South Reykjavik, were unsuccessful.
