Football matches canceled after pyrotechnics chaos during Stockholm derby
In recent weeks, several football matches have been canceled due to the use of fireworks and pyrotechnics by fans. Most notably, the Stockholm derby between Hammarby and Djurgården was completely halted on Sunday as a result of a police decision stemming from chaos in the stands.
Despite this, AIK supporter Calle Schulman defends the use of pyrotechnics in stadiums. In a recent episode of the program “Veckans Snackisar,” recorded prior to the weekend’s disruptions, he expressed his support for their use, claiming he even allows his children to play with flares and smoke bombs, while distancing himself from the use of bangers.
Schulman stated, “It’s about people expressing their passion for the team. I’m not saying they should burn things or do what they do, but if it happens, it happens. It’s not that dangerous.”
However, sports columnist Robert Laul disagrees. He emphasizes the significant risks associated with using extremely hot flares in crowded places, suggesting Schulman’s comments may encourage illegal behavior. “Those who use pyrotechnics in the stands risk legal consequences, often being young people aged 15 to 20 who may not consider the repercussions,” Laul asserted. He urges caution in advocating for illegal pyrotechnic use at football matches.
The ongoing debate surrounding the use of pyrotechnics in sports venues continues to raise concerns about safety and legal implications for those involved.
