Fatal accident at Ryyskälä Airport in Finland prompts investigation
Anu Vahteristo’s Wednesday began as a regular workday at the Ryyskälä Airport office, located in a motel building on the airfield. However, everything changed after noon when staff entered to report troubling noises coming from the airfield. Vahteristo immediately proceeded to the runway, where she saw black smoke billowing from a wreckage scene.
The airport, managed by the Ryyskälä Foundation, attempted to extinguish the initial fire, but its intensity made further action impossible, forcing everyone to maintain a safe distance. Vahteristo acknowledged that fatal accidents halt nearly all other operations; her personal calendar cleared entirely.
Following the incident, practical arrangements were needed to assist in the investigation. “It’s a deeply shocking event, but the groundwork is now being laid. The wreck has been removed, and we are moving forward with restoring the landscape and providing support to the witnesses,” she stated.
Reflecting on the tragic circumstances, Vahteristo noted that two or three eyewitnesses had observed the incident closely, with two of them witnessing the accident itself. “It feels particularly tragic as the deceased were in Finland to deliver an aircraft to a new owner, and this journey ended in sorrow.”
Candles and roses were brought to the site in memory of the victims, and Vahteristo emphasized that every accident is a preventable loss. The emotional repercussions of the accident resonate deeply, especially as its history brings back painful memories from her career’s early days.
Riku Rissanen, president of the Ryyskälä Aviation Club, expressed his profound sorrow at the accident. While the impact on future operations remains uncertain, the entire aviation community anticipates the investigation’s results, aiming to implement any safety improvements identified.
