Former Finnish MP Mikko Kärnä reflects on political discourse and social media behavior in Finland
Former Finnish MP Mikko Kärnä, known for his provocative presence on social media, is reflecting on his behavior in light of recent political discussions. On September 14, Kärnä expressed regret for his role in contemporary politics on platform X (formerly Twitter), stating, “This current politics is pure garbage, and I apologize to everyone for being part of it.” He criticized the prevalent culture of misunderstanding and conflict in political discourse.
Kärnä’s social media approach has become notably more measured. When asked why he felt compelled to apologize now, he noted, “It simply reached a boiling point for me after following the discussions of the day.” Having left the Finnish Parliament in spring 2023 after failing to secure reelection, he believes the discourse has become increasingly chaotic.
A former member of Parliament and now the mayor of Rautavaara, Kärnä is recognized as one of Finland’s most controversial politicians. He has been in the spotlight for his bold statements on various issues, including the potential legalization of snus and proposals for a “fatsoosipäivä” to boost pork consumption. Despite his provocative past, he claims he does not regret specific tweets and believes lively discussions can ignite when addressing people’s lifestyles.
Kärnä warns against the dangers of social media, particularly X, where brevity can lead to misinterpretation. He emphasized that constructive dialogue is necessary and pointed to the potential for Finland to become as polarized as the United States. Acknowledging his own mistakes, he encourages others to reflect on their communication styles, noting that his approach has shifted towards a more positive tone in his new role as mayor.
