A self-proclaimed sect known as “764” is reportedly engaged in the exploitation and sexual extortion of children and young people. Victims are coerced into sending sexual images and abusive material through chat applications, with perpetrators escalating their demands over time. They threaten to leak the images to the victims’ family and friends, leading some victims to inflict even greater harm on themselves, and in severe cases, to contemplate suicide.

Jonas Trolle, head of a counter-violent extremism unit, noted that these methods echo patterns seen in previous cases of sex and human trafficking he encountered during his police career. Trolle emphasizes that while the 764 group is relatively new to Swedish authorities, the crimes they commit are not. He highlights that similar internet phenomena have existed before, where young people are encouraged to harm themselves or others, often in sadistic contexts.

He calls for collaboration among municipalities and other authorities to identify individuals who may be drawn to such behaviors and need help. Ongoing preventive efforts are already in place.

Several individuals connected to the 764 group are facing legal consequences. The group’s 19-year-old founder is serving an 80-year prison sentence for child pornography offenses. Other members have been implicated in additional serious crimes, including murder and sexual abuse of minors.

Trolle points out that collaborative preventive measures continue to be a priority to redirect youth away from these dangerous activities.
