Nils Henrik Buljo, a proud actor at Beaivváš Sámi Našunálateáhter, expresses his renewed enthusiasm for work in the theater’s newly opened facilities in Kautokeino, where he has been performing since 1998. “It’s fun to come to work now. At the end of the day, I almost feel sad to go home,” he remarks with a laugh. The new building, which officially opened on August 21, houses an auditorium with a capacity of 200, a small stage for rehearsals, and various administrative spaces.

Buljo recalls the challenges of the previous location, where he and his colleagues often had to walk 300 meters in the cold, regardless of weather conditions. “Now we avoid that,” he adds, appreciating the improved indoor climate and lighting that suits theatrical needs.

Currently, the theater is rehearsing for its new piece titled “Ædnan,” based on the acclaimed work by Sámi author Linnea Axelsson. This epic narrative chronicles the lives of two Sámi families over three generations, reflecting Sámi modern history from the early 1900s to the present.

Actor Inga Marja Sarre highlights the benefits of a shared cafeteria with the Sámi secondary and reindeer herding schools, allowing performers to purchase meals when they don’t bring lunch.

Rolf Degerlund, the former theater director, expresses a mix of pride and nostalgia as he prepares to launch “Ædnan,” which examines the experiences of Sámi women affected by forced relocations. The play premieres on November 1 and includes ten performances in Kautokeino, with transportation provided for audiences traveling from across Sámi territories. Degerlund encourages theater enthusiasts to join them: “Get up from your sofas and buy tickets!”
