Numedal Upper Secondary School is facing potential closure as part of efforts to save 250 million Norwegian kroner in Buskerud. If the school closes, the 134 students will face significantly longer commutes to the nearest educational institution. The school plays a vital role in the community, supplying necessary manpower to the local economy, especially through vocational training.

Mayor Oddvar Svendsen warns that closing the school may have devastating effects on Numedal, impacting not only local businesses but also recruitment and future growth. He emphasizes that shutting down Numedal Upper Secondary School is not the only option available to achieve budgetary goals.

Students have expressed their concerns for the future of their community, stating that the entire municipality could decline if the school is closed. “It is sad and frightening to think they would shut down both the school and the village,” shared student Linnea Halland Svendsen.

During a typical school day, students are focused less on their studies and more on the uncertainty surrounding their school’s fate. Many students, like Kristian Nørstebø, appreciate the vocational training they receive, which is crucial for local industries. “This partnership between school and workplace functions very well,” he stated, highlighting the potential disruption caused by a closure.

Mayor Svendsen reiterated that closing the school would threaten the local economy and the municipality’s future. He fears for the region’s sustainability, especially as the community grapples with an aging population and declining youth numbers.

The fate of the school and the community will be discussed further as the regional council prepares to present its budget proposal on November 4. In the meantime, students have made it clear that the school is a cornerstone of their community’s identity and future.
