Finnish Tax Administration to open pop-up tax office in Lapland tourist centers
In November, the Finnish Tax Administration will open a pop-up tax office in two tourist centers in Lapland. This temporary service will launch in Saariselkä and then move to Ylläs, each operating for three days towards the end of the month.
The move comes as a response to the reduction of tax office services in Lapland, which has raised concerns among local businesses. These companies have feared having to transport hundreds of seasonal workers long distances from Northern Lapland to Rovaniemi for tax-related matters. Foreign workers are required to visit a tax office to obtain a personal identification number and a tax card.
Previously, seasonal workers arriving in the northernmost parts of Lapland could obtain their identification numbers from the tax offices in Ivalo or Kittilä, but that will no longer be possible. Since the beginning of September, services in these locations have only been available through remote connections, and they will be completely closed next year. Last year saw the closures of tax offices in Tornio, Pello, Sodankylä, and Kemijärvi. The Kemi tax office is also set to close in August 2025, leaving only the Rovaniemi tax office operational in the region.
The temporary tax office will operate in Saariselkä starting November 19 and in Ylläs from November 26, with each location open for three days. Further updates will be provided as the situation develops.
