On September 3, a severe rainstorm hit the central area of Mikkeli, causing significant disruptions. After approximately half an hour of intense rainfall, streets were flooded, and vehicles were surrounded by water. By the evening, the rain had subsided, but damage repairs are expected to take months. Jarkko Hyttinen, the city’s property director, stated that Mikkeli’s municipal buildings fared relatively well. The city owns around 400 buildings, all of which were inspected after the storm, revealing no rain damage in the Rantakylä area, located about six kilometers from the center. However, the Sodan ja Rauhan keskus Muisti and the Päämajan school experienced some damage, with water reportedly entering a few rooms at the city hall through windows.

Preliminary repair costs are estimated to be around €150,000 to €200,000, but this figure may change as final repairs are completed. The city is in discussions with its insurance company, and it appears that most costs will be covered. Repair efforts are expected to take several months, and Hyttinen expressed sympathy for private property owners, who may face considerably higher damages. West Savo reported two weeks ago that insurance claims from Lähi-Tapiola following the rainstorm could reach between €2 to €3 million, with apartment buildings in the city center suffering the most.

In Mikkeli Central Hospital, water entered the two lowest floors, but hospital operations continued normally. Veli-Matti Thure, director of facility services, estimates repairs will take about five months. Additionally, floodwater affected the Kauppakeskus Stella shopping center, which was temporarily closed but resumed operations the next day. The storm caused around €200,000 in damages, fortunately covered by insurance.
