Swedish government faces scrutiny over climate targets amid conflicting scenarios
During a press conference in August, the government asserted that an increase in the reduction obligation would enable Sweden to meet its climate targets within the EU, citing a “main scenario.” However, an SVT investigation revealed that there were several scenarios beyond what the government presented, indicating that Sweden is far from achieving its climate goals in at least one alternative scenario. Both Elisabeth Svantesson and Romina Pourmokhtari referred to the more optimistic scenario where Sweden meets its climate targets as the “main scenario” in interviews with SVT. Nevertheless, the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency clarified that there is no recognized “main scenario.” “We do not refer to it as a ‘main scenario.’ Both scenarios are equally likely,” stated Sara Almqvist from the agency.
Romina Pourmokhtari maintained that she was only presented with one “main scenario.” In response, the Social Democrats, the Green Party, and the Left Party have announced that they will report the climate minister to parliamentary authorities. SVT is seeking a comment from Romina Pourmokhtari.
