Leadership in the Left Alliance will change this upcoming Saturday, with three candidates competing for the position of chairperson. A consultative membership vote on the selection concludes today, while the final decision will be made by the party council.

The new chairperson will take the reins of the party during a challenging time, particularly in maintaining the support gained under former leader Li Andersson. The party’s parliamentary group has also undergone restructuring following the European Parliament elections, with Andersson and the former group leader Jussi Saramo moving on, along with long-time MP Merja Kyllönen.

The candidates vying for the leadership role are first-term MPs Minja Koskela and Laura Meriluoto, alongside regional council member Gashaw Bibani. Bibani, who was born in 1987 in Iraq’s Kurdistan and moved to Finland in 1995, brings a unique perspective as a project manager at the Live Foundation. He aims to appeal to those in the party seeking leadership that reflects the diversity of Finnish society.

Koskela, an MP from Helsinki, has been noted for her educational background in music and social sciences, likely resonating with educated, younger female voters. She emphasizes teamwork and robust dialogues on political issues as key strengths.

Meriluoto, hailing from Kuopio, speaks to the need for leadership that understands regional challenges, focusing on strengthening the party’s foundations and expanding its support base.

The party council will appoint the new leader on October 19, based on the consultative vote results. Currently, the Left Alliance has approximately 13,800 members. The chosen candidate must secure a majority of the votes, with speculation on who will emerge victorious amid a competitive landscape.
