Mjøndalen faces relegation battle after point deduction from Norwegian Football Federation
Mjøndalen is currently near the bottom of the first division, engaged in a desperate battle to avoid relegation. On Monday, the Norwegian Football Federation deducted one point from their total. However, the team is not hiding in defeat. This afternoon, players gathered in the sun at Bragernes Square, the heart of Drammen, for a new team photo.
“We know that many in Drammen are very fond of the brown, and we want to contribute. We’ve brought the entire first team and support staff here to take a new team photo,” said managing director Christian Gauseth.
Despite having been incorporated into Drammen since 2020, Mjøndalen locals still identify as Eikværinger, viewing themselves as fierce rivals to Strømsgodset. As they posed in their familiar brown jerseys in front of the town hall, a passerby jokingly inquired if they were lost. Gauseth, however, remained unfazed and responded lightheartedly.
He acknowledged the prevailing support for Strømsgodset in Drammen but noted a sense of longing for Mjøndalen since the merger. “We want to address that longing and create something memorable for those who support us in Drammen as we head into the holiday season,” he remarked.
With four matches left in the season, Mjøndalen certainly hopes to turn things around as they prepare to face Sogndal. They currently sit just one point away from the playoff spot. Due to the penalty imposed by the Federation, this gap could widen to two points if the ruling stands. Nevertheless, Gauseth exuded confidence, stating, “We believe in what we are doing… and we are ready to deliver.” The first opportunity to prove themselves comes with the home match against Sogndal on Monday.
