Unusual cloud formations observed in Reykjavík ahead of Tsuchinshan-ATLAS comet sighting

Unusual cloud formations seen in the western sky above the capital region and the southwestern part of Iceland are traces left by airplanes. Residents can look westward this evening to catch a glimpse of the Tsuchinshan-ATLAS comet.

Some inhabitants of the capital area may have noticed the strange cloud patterns in the western sky at dusk. According to Sævar Helgi Bragason, widely known as Star Sævar, there is a simple explanation for these formations. “The high-altitude clouds are likely a result of cold and moist conditions in the atmosphere. As the air passes through the engines of aircraft, it heats up significantly, resulting in cloud formation,” he explained.

When asked if these clouds could be the result of an explosion or possibly falling space debris, Sævar dismissed such theories. “These are just contrails and high-altitude cloud formations.”

However, he encouraged the public to gaze toward the western sky around 7:30 PM tonight for a chance to see the Tsuchinshan-ATLAS comet. “Most people have a compass on their phones; you just need to find west and look a bit to the left, and you should spot the comet,” he advised. The comet will become more visible as the sky darkens shortly after sunset.
